Hawaii, APEC and signage

Back in the USA

*The H1 expressway here is labeled "Interstate".   Is this wishful thinking or what?

*Just our luck to arrive during APEC(Asia Pacific Economic Conference).  Every leader of every country bordering the Pacific Ocean is here including Obama, Medvedev, Jintao, etc.  Most of Waikiki is barricaded and these folks lack sophisticated skills in redirecting traffic. We missed a turn and were surrounded by the Secret Service. CIA, Police, Military,  and under-cover agents, etal.  We had to open the hood and trunk on our Kia rental and get sniffed by guard dogs before being sent on our way.  In additon it is hard enough to read Hawaiian street signs during the day(everything starts with "k") but at night it is frigging impossible and they are not illuminated.  They could be braille and work just as well.

*Visited Pearl Harbor.  The water shuttle to the Arizona was not operating but we toured other parts of the memorial.  Particularly impressive were the 52 monuments to submarines lost in the Pacific in WWII.  Most, but not all, went down with approximately 80 crew members on board.  However, the havoc they created and the number of Japanese warships and freighters sunk were paramount to our success in assuring that we do not speak Japanese.

*Starting to adjust to the time change but still more to go.  Hawaii is 5 hours different from NC.  Japan was 12 and Taiwan and China 13. Not sure how these are affected by daylight saving time.  Left Japan at 7:25 PM on Nov. 12 and arrived in Hawaii at 7:55 AM Nov. 12.  No that is not a typo, it's called the International Date Line.  If you could do this regularly, would you grow younger?

*Going to the North shore tomorrow.  BIG waves start end of the month but we shall see.                      Hang 10....R-i-g-h-t !
